St. Louis Zoo WildCare Park is undergoing development in North St. Louis County, where a former 18-hole golf course is being transformed into a 425-acre conservation and safari-style destination. Scheduled to open in 2027, the park will serve as both a breeding center for endangered species and an immersive guest experience focused on conservation and education.
From Golf Course to Conservation Center
Located on land once home to the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union Headquarters and the Emerald Greens golf course, the property is being repurposed with sustainability in mind. Turf is being converted to native grasses to support the health and movement of hoofed animals, and existing structures are being adapted rather than demolished to minimize waste. For example, one former golf course building will become the Canopy Clubhouse.
Conservation at the Core
The WildCare Park’s primary mission is the protection and breeding of endangered and critically endangered species, particularly large hoofed mammals, or ungulates. Species to be housed and studied include the Grevy’s zebra, addax, and mountain bongo. The Kent Family Conservation and Animal Science Center, a dedicated hub for animal care and research, will support these efforts.
A Unique Visitor Experience
Beyond its conservation mission, the WildCare Park will offer guests a variety of ways to engage with wildlife and the natural environment. Planned visitor features include:
- Guided safari tours
- Walking safari trails
- An immersive “Zooseum”
- Nature adventure areas
- An observation tower overlooking the park
These elements aim to create a compelling and educational journey through the conservation landscape.
Economic and Environmental Impact
The development of the St. Louis Zoo WildCare Park is expected to bring significant economic benefits to the region while enhancing the city’s leadership in conservation efforts. By repurposing existing land and infrastructure, the project aligns with broader goals of environmental responsibility and sustainable tourism.
As construction progresses, the WildCare Park represents a bold step forward in the St. Louis Zoo’s mission to lead in wildlife conservation and public engagement.
