Why the South County Macy’s Closed
The closing was part of Macy’s official “Bold New Chapter” strategy. The retailer confirmed plans to close approximately 150 underperforming stores over three years while investing in its remaining locations. The South County Center store began clearance sales in January 2025 and closed by the end of March.
A Long History in St. Louis Retail
The building originally operated as a Famous-Barr store under St. Louis-based May Department Stores. Macy’s entered the local market after acquiring and rebranding Famous-Barr locations in 2006, including the store at South County Center.
The change therefore represented more than the loss of a department-store tenant. It ended a long-running use of an anchor building tied to several generations of St. Louis-area shopping history.
What Happens at South County Center Next?
CBL continues to operate South County Center as an active shopping destination. The acquisition gives the mall owner greater control over the former anchor property, but a specific long-term redevelopment plan for the Macy’s space has not been publicly confirmed.
