The Great Forest Park Balloon Race 2025 will once again fill the skies over Forest Park in St. Louis with brilliant color and excitement. Celebrating its 53rd year, this beloved free event is scheduled for Friday, September 19, and Saturday, September 20, 2025, at Emerson Central Fields.
Balloon Glow – Friday, September 19
Festivities begin Friday evening with the traditional Balloon Glow. Gates at Emerson Central Fields open at 5:00 PM, offering food trucks, concessions, and family-friendly activities. As night falls, dozens of balloons will be inflated and tethered, glowing against the evening sky. The evening concludes with a fireworks finale at 9:15 PM.
Race Day – Saturday, September 20
On Saturday, the fields open at 1:00 PM with live music, sponsor booths, and the Purina Children’s Entertainment Area. The highlight of the day is the “Hare and Hound” style hot air balloon race, with a launch window scheduled between 4:30 PM and 6:00 PM, weather permitting. In this unique format, one “hare” balloon takes flight first, followed by the “hound” balloons competing to drop markers closest to the hare’s target.
What to Bring
Spectators are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs for a comfortable day at the park. Outside food and non-alcoholic beverages are permitted, though a wide variety of food and drink vendors will also be on site.

For over five decades, the Great Forest Park Balloon Race has been a signature late-summer tradition in St. Louis, drawing families, friends, and visitors from across the region.
