*Bootleggin BBQ*
Bootleggin BBQ has one mission—sharing smoky goodness while creating an experience that leaves every guest feeling like family. Known for its award-winning Kansas City–style BBQ and craft brews, the restaurant blends quality flavors with genuine hospitality, making it a standout in the St. Louis food scene.
The menu showcases signature smoked dishes like tender ribs and rich burnt ends, as well as creative favorites including BBQ nachos—voted among the best in the city—and sauced, smoked wings. Even non-meat eaters can indulge with Smoked Portobello Mushrooms, proving BBQ can be for everyone.
From Chicago Catering to St. Louis Staple
The story began in 2006 when Brenton launched Bootleggin BBQ in Chicago with longtime friends Tim and Hayley McCormick. Drawing from his Kansas City roots, Brenton recognized Chicago’s need for authentic smoky BBQ. The catering venture thrived, but life changes eventually brought Bootleggin BBQ to Kansas City—and later to St. Louis.
At the same time, Eddie and a friend were pursuing their passion for brewing beer in St. Louis. While perfecting their craft, they also began barbecuing, eventually hosting an annual event called The Church of Blues, Brews and BBQ. It was at this gathering that Brenton and Eddie met—sparking the partnership that shaped Bootleggin BBQ as it is today.
A Name Rooted in Prohibition History
The restaurant’s name nods to the Prohibition era and Kansas City Alderman Tom “Boss Tom” Pendergast, a figure known for keeping the city wet during prohibition. While Pendergast’s political dealings were controversial, his role in fostering Kansas City’s jazz culture and BBQ legacy is undeniable. Bootleggin BBQ celebrates those lasting positives—the booze, the brews, and of course, the BBQ.
Bootleggin BBQ continues to serve up authentic flavors with a side of local history, ensuring every guest leaves with a full stomach and a good story.
